Selling your music through TuneCore

I’ve been an enthusiastic proponent of TuneCore for the past few years, ever since my success selling our own Mad Conductor releases online. The first EP, full length album, and second EP are all available through about a dozen online distributors, (including Itunes) thanks to TuneCore, and now we’re working on our second EP to be released this spring.

After selling CDs through our own website, and shipping discs to Interpunk, Amazon, CD Baby, etc., there’s something very refreshing about selling downloads! No shipping, billing, or invoices - once your stuff’s online, your work is done! TuneCore can send a check once a month, or put your earnings directly into a PayPal account.

What’s it cost?

Once your stuff’s online, it costs about $20.00/year to keep it there. You get back 100% of what the retailers would pay you if you went directly through the retail sites. And you retain 100% ownership and control of your music.

Itunes pays 70 cents on every $1.00 you sell, and so does TuneCore. It’s a good deal!

Can I distribute my music directly to Itunes?

I had initially approached Itunes directly to see if we could get our stuff online. I sent a message, but never got a response back. They must be swamped with requests from thousands of individual independent artists.

That’s where a company like TuneCore comes in handy. They basically act as a record label, approaching Itunes U.S. (and about a dozen other online stores) with a product that’s packaged and ready for sale.  But unlike a record label, your music always stays completely under your control.
